Developer Remedy Entertainment is best known as for the cult classic Alan Wake and its more mainstream hit Control. Nearly a year after Alan Wake II became an awards darling, the studio is making moves for both its supernatural series: bringing them to the silver and small screens.
On Thursday, the studio revealed it was partnering with Annapurna in a two-tier deal. As part of that partnership, Annapurna has the rights to option both Alan and Control for “new entertainment mediums,” including film and TV. Annapurna is also pledging to cover 50% of the development costs for Remedy’s Control 2: the studio gets the greater revenue share from its game (after costs are recouped), while Annapurna will take most of the revenue from the eventual adaptations. It doesn’t sound like any Hollywood studio or creative partners have been locked down yet to spearhead those, but Annapurna CEO Megan Ellison said its deal with Remedy would let it “push the boundaries of how stories are told and experienced across mediums.”
Meanwhile, Remedy CEO Tero Virtala said the partnership marks a “significant milestone” for the developer. Along with helping Control 2 see the light of day, Annapurna’s involvement helps it self-publish whichever projects it chooses. “This…is an exciting opportunity for us,” Virtala added. “We know Annapurna shares our passion for our IPs and the universes we have created. […] Their expertise across film, TV, and video games makes them an ideal partner for us.”
Remedy tried making an Alan Wake show back in 2018 to no avail, but this Annapurna deal marks its first go with Control. Thanks to expansions for that game, the studio has already established the two franchises are part of a shared universe. However that plays out in film and TV (and which game gets adapted into what medium), everything’s currently coming up Remedy.
